Introducing our new microlot filter coffee, Magezi #1, from Bulambuli District in Uganda. 
Magezi # 1 is a naturally fermented coffee that gave us jammy, sweet blackcurrant flavours and bright, refreshing bite reminiscent of apple drops. 

The Bulambuli region is known for producing complex, fruit forward coffee and due to a staggered range of altitudes across many of the farmlands, the region has a similarly staggered harvest season that lasts nearly 6 months. Owing to the quality of coffee produced and the natural fermentation employed after harvest, our Magezi #1 is the kind of natural filter coffee we love: complex, balanced and delicious. While the flavours we found ourselves picking up on have some contrast, there's a harmony between a fruity sweetness and acidity on the palate that makes for a great filter coffee. 

Produced with support from Ibero, this lot comes from the collective efforts of between 200 and 400 farmsteads. Some of the farms involved involved are less than a hectare in size and many come from small villages. These villages will sometimes have populations as low as 200 people. Due to this, many of the farmers in these villages work collaboratively, to ensure more productivity. This practice goes further as many of the villages will then form parishes of up to 12 communities. These parishes will work with Ibero, who oversee buying harvested cherries, collection, processing and distribution of coffee and in turn, Ibero support the farmers with centralised processing and higher returns. 

This support leads to growth in the region and more financial prosperity for the farmers and their communities who rely on coffee as an export. The bonus is that it also leads to higher quality and more interesting coffees like our Magezi #1 emerging from regions like Bulambuli.
